We follow the National Curriculum: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/425601/PRIMARY_national_curriculum.pdf
At West Ewell Infant School we use the Book Banding system as a general reading scheme. This features titles new and old from a wide variety of publishers.
For guided reading we have a large selection of Oxford Reading Tree books in sets of 6 as well as sets from other major publishers. The importance of phonics is reflected in our purchase of a large number of Oxford Reading Tree phonics titles, again in sets of 6.
Throughout foundation stage phonics is introduced sound by sound using the 'Jolly Phonics' songs. The children are introduced to these sounds in preparation for reading and we then follow it on with CVC words and learning how to blend and segment words. A parent workshop runs at the beginning of the year to introduce parents to the way we teach phonics. We learn tricky words during reception and send word cards home so that parents can support our teaching.
In Key Stage 1 workshops are also available to support parents with phonics. We follow 'Letters and Sounds' planning and we adapt it to suit the needs of the class or set. Our learning assistants and HLTAs run phonics interventions throughout year 1 and 2 to support children further. Children are streamed into sets during Key Stage 1 at certain times of the year although are also taught phonics and grammar within their class and English lessons.
