Art & Design Curriculum

Intent

At West Ewell Primary School, art and design exist as a vital part of our pupils’ entitlement to a broad and balanced, creative curriculum. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. Our high-quality art and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They will also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Implementation

Our curriculum allows each child the opportunity, the space to explore and create, the time to develop skills, the technical ability and the artistic language to develop as an artist. Drawing, painting, printing, textiles and 3D form are developed each year within our spiral curriculum, focus is placed on the importance and value of the process; embedding and extending skills and techniques, ready to apply to an end product.  Artistic behaviours are shared, encouraged and celebrated, fostering community, collaboration and pride.

Art Week, Take One Picture with the National Art Gallery, Art Club, working with professional artists, visiting galleries, partnership with our local high school and exhibiting our work in public settings, all enrich our curriculum and support the children to challenge their ideas about art and design, think critically and develop a culture of creativity.

Impact

Art and Design at West Ewell Primary School gives our pupils the knowledge, experience, techniques and vocabulary, to empower themselves to make decisions and develop themselves as artists. Pupils recognise art and design as a subject in its own right, but through the explicit teaching of a range of skills, techniques and genres, understand how art and design are woven into our daily life, culture and history.  Pupils explore and create original pieces, referencing the work of historic, modern and contemporary artists and have the vocabulary to explain their influences.  Sketchbooks provide an ongoing record of experimentation, development of technique and variety of experience.
