Swimming in 2019/20
Our swimming pool served us admirably when we were an infant school and that generations of children have learnt to swim here. We are swimming until the end of the summer term, but then sadly we are having to say ‘goodbye’ to the pool. The main reason is that, whilst the children can prove that they can swim 25m with a range of strokes (as per the National Curriculum demands) in our pool, they cannot fully meet the requirement that they can ‘perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations’. The pool is ageing too and to keep it in use would require a fairly substantial investment; the money that we would have to spend to repair, upgrade and to provide new age-appropriate changing facilities would be considerable and we feel that this money can be used to make a bigger, more positive impact elsewhere in the School. We have had to make the difficult decision to close the pool permanently at the end of this school year. Next year, two year groups will swim at the Rainbow Centre in Epsom: Year 4 and Year 5 (more details to follow) will swim there to ensure that all of the children can meet all of the National Curriculum swimming demands. In future years only one year group, Year 4, will swim offsite at the Rainbow Centre. We know that this decision will disappoint many but we are sure that this is the best decision for swimming and for prudent use of our School funds.
