Our nursery welcomes children from 2 years old until they are ready to start school. Our nursery classes are located within the school community, within a self-contained building with secure outdoor play areas. Apple Class is for children aged 3-4 years and Pear Class is for children aged 2-3 years.
We embrace every child's individual needs and our diversity makes us unique. All our children benefit from exceptional, specially trained and supportive experienced early years staff.
We give priority to creating an exciting learning environment for our nursery children. We want the children to learn through purposeful, practical activities so we take great care to provide a wealth of opportunities for both indoors and out, for children to explore and investigate the world about them.
Through art, music, stories and imaginative play, we provide activities that help to develop the children's ability to listen and observe as well as to use their imagination. Our aim is to help every child flourish and blossom giving them the best start in life.
Children in Nursery follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. There are seven areas of learning:
The Prime Areas (these are particularly important for your child's development and future learning)
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
- Communication and Language (CL)
- Physical Development (PD)
The Specific Areas (the prime areas are strengthened and applied through these areas)
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The EYFS framework identifies the essential role of play in your child’s development. It is through both child-led play and play guided by an adult that your child will develop confidence and relationships with others. Through play, EYFS practitioners will help your child to extend their vocabulary and develop their communication skills. The EYFS framework identifies three characteristics of effective teaching and learning:
- Playing and Exploring
- Active Learning
- Creating and Thinking Critically
We carefully assess children during their time with us, and regularly review their progress to ensure that our planned activities are meeting their needs. We use Tapestry to capture children’s individual achievements; these will be shared with parents and carers. West Ewell Primary School and Nursery highly values the partnership with families and we encourage notes about children’s achievements outside the nursery environment.
