The Bourne Education Trust and West Ewell Primary School and Nursery are committed to safeguarding and promoting the physical, mental and emotional welfare of every pupil, both inside and outside of our schools’ premises. We implement a trust-wide preventative approach to managing safeguarding concerns, ensuring that the wellbeing of pupils is at the forefront of all action taken and that healthy relationships are promoted. The trust is also committed to a zero-tolerance policy with regards to sexual harassment and violence.

Operation Encompass   Capture

West Ewell Primary School has taken the opportunity to partner with Surrey Police to participate in the Operation Encompass scheme.

Operation Encompass is designed to provide early reporting on any domestic incidents that occur outside of school that may impact on a child’s wellbeing and access to learning in school.

The scheme requires the police to report to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) after a domestic incident. The DSL is fully aware of the sensitivity and confidentiality of such information and will handle this information responsibly in accordance with our internal information sharing protocol to ensure that children receive the care and support they may need during the school day.

This scheme enhances our school commitment to ensure every child succeeds by providing timely and high quality pastoral care that improves the wellbeing and safety of all our children.

How We Keep Children Safe

All staff receive regular safeguarding and child protection training.
Safer recruitment practices ensure all adults working with children are suitable.
Children are taught how to stay safe through PSHE lessons, assemblies, and online safety activities.
We work closely with parents, carers, and external agencies to support pupil wellbeing.

Support for Looked After Children

We recognise that children who are looked after (or previously looked after) may need additional support in school to help them feel safe, settled, and able to achieve their best.

At West Ewell Primary and Nursery School:
The Designated Teacher works closely with the DSL, parents/carers, social workers, and the Virtual School to ensure every child has the right support.
We make sure that Personal Education Plans (PEPs) are kept up to date and focus on academic progress, wellbeing, and enrichment opportunities.
Staff receive training to understand the needs of looked after children, including attachment and trauma awareness.

Young Carers 

At West Ewell Primary School and Nursery, we are committed to supporting all young carers so that they can access and enjoy their education in full. We recognise that young carers may face additional challenges in attending, achieving, and participating in school life. Our school believes that every child has the right to learn and thrive, regardless of their caring responsibilities at home.
