Computing

Intent

Technology is a key part of everyday life. Our curriculum includes the development of programming and debugging skills as part of coding as well as giving children experiences of how to use technology to enhance presenting ideas, searching for information, creating music and making their own games. Our children’s learning is enhanced through the use of technology in other areas of the curriculum. Our aim is for all children to become confident users of technology in a safe and effective way so that they can develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to use appropriate ICT resources as powerful tools for learning and become life-long users of technology.

Implementation

Computing is taught using a blocked curriculum approach. Having discreet lessons means that the children are able to develop depth in their knowledge and skills over the duration of each of their computing topics. Where, appropriate, meaningful links will be made between the computing curriculum and engaging contexts in other subjects and topics. ‘Purple Mash’ is used by teachers as a starting point for the planning of computing lessons whilst also ensuring a balanced coverage of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Knowledge and skills are mapped across each topic and year group to ensure systematic progression and to meet the needs of all pupils.

Impact

After the implementation of our computing curriculum, children at West Ewell Primary School will be digitally literate and able to join the rest of the world on its digital platform.  They will be equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely.  The biggest impact we want on our children is that they understand the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online.

As children become more confident in their abilities in Computing, they will become more independent and key life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking and self-evaluation become second nature.
